Take Ownership, Drop the BS - Advice from a GIBS Girl

#TeamGIBS welcomes Hannah Hopkins to the family!

“You’ve got to be willing to put yourself out there, even if it’s uncomfortable. Growth doesn’t happen when you’re comfortable.” ~ Hannah Hopkins

She’s a wife. Mother of three. Artist. Nerd. Bad accordion player. Punk rocker and breast cancer survivor. Ironically, to meet Hannah is to be immediately comfortable in her chair, because she’s so comfortable in her own skin. #TeamGIBS expands with Fort Collins homegirl, Hannah. Let's meet her. And by the way, count up all the eyeballs on her tattoos and you get 32.

Describe yourself in five: Determined, passionate, colorful, curious, positive.

You made it to Team GIBS. How'd you do it? Wanting more and taking ownership. I desire to grow, both personally and professionally. Being excited about life brings rise to success, staying disciplined and focused on my goals every day. You’ve got to be willing to put yourself out there, even if it’s uncomfortable. Growth doesn’t happen when you’re comfortable.

What are you known for? I absolutely love short hair! I specialize in women’s short cuts and men’s grooming. I specifically enjoy taking on problem hair. Hair that just has a mind of its own. Thin or coarse, curly or stick straight, bring it on. I see hairdressing as being very mechanical with an artistic touch. I like blending those approaches to put details in my cuts that make styling easy everyday. My goal is to have my clients say they have no bad hair days.
I’m also known for taking on big changes and doing the funky stuff. You want to go from long to short, brown hair to blue, mullets, dreads, mohawk? I’m your girl.

What should we know about you? I give 110%. I am always present, prepared and passionate...and possibly prankster. I paid for beauty school by working on the American Idol Tour in 2005. I’ve made a monster movie. I used to work in a laboratory. I learned how to drive on a tractor. I have the sense of humor of a 14 year old boy.

Favorite GIBS product? Original Outlaw Hair Spackle. The consistency is smooth, so it goes on all hair types easily. The matte finish doesn’t make skin on the forehead or scalp shiny so it’s great for clients with thinning hair. It adds texture and definition. I use it on both my male and female clients. They love it!

Tips for aspiring barbers/stylists? Put your whole heart into it, be yourself, ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING, push your comfort levels, look to surround yourself with people who you admire, drop the BS that doesn’t work, be consistent every day, have FUN!!

You're a #GIBSGirl now! Sooooo kickass! It’s such a huge honor and I’ve been blown away by the company. I saw the GIBS crew at a show and I felt like I was in church. Danny Amorim was talking barbering and business and I was totally energized. I connected with the GIBS approach. Sitting there I said to myself, ‘I want to be a part of all this.’ I feel lucky to be surrounded and inspired by such a cool, talented team.

The packaging and names of Gibs Grooming products caught my attention, cause they ARE funny. What’s inside sealed the deal. The products are thoughtfully formulated and easy to use. They are exactly what my clients need to look great everyday.

What makes a great barber/stylist? Caring. Care about your art. Care about people. Care about learning. Care about your business. Care about your success. Care about yourself.

Cancer sucks, Hannah: I know. I’m a brand new breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with an aggressive, rare form in February 2017. I had an immediate bi-lateral mastectomy. It was a scary time but I decided that I have a choice in how I deal with the stress. I didn’t let myself go down the rabbit hole of worry. Cancer is inconvenient, painful and expensive, but those challenges can solidify your foundation. Right now, I’m getting ready to do my second surgery out of three for reconstruction. Yay boobies!
